Algunos pasajes me conmovieron, como el de un perrito que al atacar almihada gato del emperador es castigado y expulsado. From what she wrote her culture was very strict especially back then when this was written in the 11th century.
I liked I liked this book but I have to say I wasn’t all too happy about the way it was written. Most of the book is gossip and humble brags, which is just an incredible testament to the lubro of human nature through the centuries. Shonagon’s book was actually a journal full of entrees of her life as a “lady in waiting” in a palace in Japan.

The Value of Triviality Sei Shonagon fussed over the most trivial things, and perhaps she could be seen as shallow and aloof to the greater issues of the world. In spite of Borges’s belief that people cannot understand the chaotic world, he continually attempted to do so in his writing.
An though it is considered a highly regarded historical document, which is a neat attribute to the lubro I would not personally recommend this read unless you are really interested dde the origin, history and country in which it comes from. Apparently this was attributed to the men usually trying to emulate the great Chinese poets, whereas the women were less restrained by norms and as a result produced more authentic, lasting works.

Though in its nature her style of writing is very poetic in itself which does help its intriguing nature. The ideal gift for a would-be lover.
When change does sweep through our current times, may it be for peace and joy. Or acquiring the second volume of a tale whose first volume one has enjoyed. But again I will restate that it is a very long read. Beautiful Things Flashes of wit, impunity, tenderness. I had read some bits and pieces of it in Estonian translation and also in the original classical Japanese I recommend Meredith McKinney’s translation.
I never finished it. A somewhat bizarre collection of personal anecdotes of the Japanese court, poetic descriptions and what I can only describe as thousand-year-old listicles. True to that though the context of the tale is considered more autobiographical in its nature.
Much of his work xlmohada with people’s efforts to find the center of the labyrinth, symbolic of achieving understanding of their place in a mysterious universe.

Sei Shonagon is a Heian era mean-noble who laughs when poor girls get their clothes ripped off and says things like, “Nothing more need be said about the pine needle tree. Her business is in being judgmental. Although some entries were of that sort others were so short and confusing, that of course no one but her understood, I could only guess what she was trying to say with her poem like writings. We should be so lucky when our most pressing concerns consist of pretending to be asleep, to no avail, when someone you’re not in the mood of seeing come a-knocking in the wee small hours of the morning, the nerve! Though the translation was quite clear and made for easy perusal, this is more a book for cultural study than for light reading. Someone in their seventies or eighties who’s been ill for some days now.
Sample of the latter: Provides an interesting look into court society during the Heian Period of Japanese history, so it’s particularly helpful for historians.

Thanks for telling us about the problem. It was not a bad read at all only difficult to follow at certain points of the book. Featuring reflections on royal and religious ceremonies, nature, conversation, poetry, and many other subjects, “The Pillow Book” is an intimate look at the experiences and outlook of the Heian upper class, further enriched by Ivan Morris’s extensive notes and critical contextualization.
Couldn’t really handle the disdain she has for the lower classes.
